Day 8: What movie can you watch over and over and not get bored with?

This is easy! 

When I saw the movie “Grease” it was in the movie theater… THIRTY-THREE YEARS AGO.   Has it really been that long?

I couldn’t even begin to determine how many times I have seen this movie.  I wore out both the sountrack album and the soundtrack EIGHT-TRACK TAPE (yikes!) from listening to them so much.

I know nearly every line to the movie, and every single song.  I have seen it performed live at the Des Moines Civic Center, and have seen it performed by two different high schools.    I always wanted to marry someone like Danny Zuko, and I wanted to dress like Sandy Olssen.  This is a movie that I could watch over and over again — (which I now have on VHS and DVD.  )

 My three girls have been bugging me the last few weeks to take them to see this movie. We were at the mall this weekend and ended up missing the movie time by about 10 minutes, so we agreed that I would take them to see it last night.

I got home from work last night, and checked the movie times online, and read a little blurb about the movie. Because although my girls wanted desperately to see this movie, not a single one of them could tell me what the movie was even about. I noticed the rating was PG-13 which was ok, and we were off to the movie.

I will admit, I am a sucker for the “nerd gets the girl” movie, a la “Can’t Buy Me Love” with Patrick Dempsey in his uglier days. I was expecting something along these lines, where in the end, the guy gets the girl, and they are hopelessly in love with each other. Wherein, my girls feel butterflies in their tummies and *sigh* isn’t that just the way things are supposed to be?

What I did NOT expect was that apparently the movie ratings are not as strict as they used to be. Besides the fact that the main character in the movie is not even good-looking, but his nerdy friend takes part in a threesome with two trashy high-schools to prove that he’s not gay.

Oh yes, you heard me right. So while these two girls are sharing the creamy filling of a chocolate cupcake, this possibly gay teenager looks on, ends up having a threesome with the two girls, and this is apparently supposed to be hilarious. The two girls even tell this kid that he might not be gay, because he hasn’t been with any “real women” yet.

Come on, seriously?

This movie is full of some pretty raunchy material, a consistent stream of sexual humor and some very irresponsible behavior. The main character, Dennis, has a father that encourages him to have casual sex, while also providing alcohol and condoms to the teenager. There is a moment of brief nudity and some very vulgar humor. Beth Cooper’s boyfriend spends much of the movie strung out on cocaine, and to be honest, her character wasn’t even all that likeable anyways. She was rude and snobby and drunk for quite a bit of the movie, and we’re supposed to find her appealing? The F-bomb (which among adults is not entirely uncalled for at times) was dropped a couple times in this movie, and I felt the urge on many occasions to cover my kids’ ears (and EYES) throughout many scenes.

I was disappointed. Not only by the movie, but by what is considered appropriate material for a PG-13 movie.
